All retail businesses should be looking to
improve on a daily basis. If your retail store is doing
good, minor adjustments need to be made. If your store is
doing poorly or the sales and profits trend has been
declining, major changes are needed to reverse this
trend. However, most retail store owners are conservative
and creatures of habit. Thus, major changes are not even
attempted even if the business is in dire straits.
Taking calculated risks should be the norm for any small
business owner. In order to be successful in a highly
competitive world, chances need to be taken. Unless your
business has no or limited competition, retail store owners
need to make sure the shoppers have an unique shopping
experience. Unfortunately, this is not the case as most
retailers have the same basic boring stores.
What can a retail store owner do to change their business for
the good? Here are just a few suggestions of making some major
positive changes to your store.
1.Get over the fear of failure. Successful people and companies
have experienced failure. The difference is they learn what
went wrong and tried something else. Others just complained new
things do not work and go back to their conservative shell and
let their business continue to erode away.
2.Get employees involved in how to make the store more
successful. You can get creative ideas to improve your
business.
3.Use special events to make your store stand out from your
competition. This is a long term method of making your store
superior to the competition. Many of these can held at no or
low cost. Some special events can draw media attention, which
can have a positive impact on your retail store.
4.I have been to many stores that have acceptable or even good
customer service. However, it is extremely rare to find the
store that WOWS me with exceptional service. For
example, most stores go way out of their way for their best
customers. However, there is a big difference in how they treat
their regular customers. If every customer was treated like
their best customers, it could create a huge surge of new
customers and increased sales among existing customers.
5.Talk to other owners in the same industry or even better
different industries. In retail what works in one kind of store
will most likely will work in another.
6.I mentioned doing special events earlier. One thing that
could be done is to have a sale promotion for a specific period
of time offering the customer their purchase free if a certain
event happens. Before you say NO WAY, there are
companies that offer insurance to cover the costs. This could
generate a lot of positive publicity and result in many new
customers. For example, the event could be weather
related or a sports event and or season or anything else you
can think of. Here is an excellent site with more information
about this kind of sales event and other promotions for your
retail store:
